Grestel receives the EDP Electricity and Environment Award 2017 in the Industry category

The EDP Award aims to recognize entities connected to the EDP Distribuição network that demonstrate measurable improvements in energy efficiency or productivity through the adoption of appropriate electrical methods and processes, as well as the implementation of good environmental practices among their employees, families, and local communities.

Grestel was selected from 267 applications, including 142 in the Industry category, reflecting its achievements in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability with the launch of its third production unit – Grestel III – earlier in the year. Covering 11,000 square meters, the new factory was designed with top-level energy efficiency and environmental quality in mind, equipped with materials and systems that use energy rationally, resulting in over 30% energy savings.

Key highlights include:

  • 50-meter tunnel kiln: the most modern and efficient in Portugal, equipped with high-tech energy management systems achieving a 30% reduction in specific energy consumption.
  • Compressed air system: installed exclusively with variable-speed compressors and piping designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize losses and leaks.
  • Solar panels: for domestic water heating, and photovoltaic panels for industrial self-consumption.

The building itself was designed for thermal comfort and natural lighting, featuring large translucent smoke vent skylights, extensive glazing, and lateral ventilation grilles that ensure continuous energy savings.

The 10th edition award ceremony took place on November 22, attended by Grestel’s CEO, Eng. Miguel Casal, and Factory Director, Eng. Carlos Pinto. Grestel proudly views this award as a distinguishing mark of its responsible approach and commitment to sustainable growth. Fully operational since the start of the year, the third production unit has expanded the company’s manufacturing capacity, improved energy efficiency and environmental performance, and created over 100 new jobs in the region, with additional positions still open in various areas.
